Backups & troubleshooting

Back up and restore the shop, run the checkup screen, update, and fix what is not working.

Backups

The whole shop — products, stock, staff, every sale — is written into one file each time a shift closes. Backups are kept on the server PC and older ones are rotated out automatically.

Copy the most recent one somewhere else regularly. A backup that lives only on the machine you are protecting against is not a backup.

Restore

Restoring is done from the back office. Before it writes anything, it takes a safety copy of the data currently on the server, so even a restore chosen by mistake can be undone.

Restore onto a working server rather than a fresh one where you can: it is the shorter path, and the shorter path is the one that gets taken correctly at eight in the morning.

If the server PC dies

Install the store server on the replacement PC, restore your most recent backup, and pair the tills again with a fresh code. The shop is back with everything up to the last shift close.

This is why the pairing code is saved to the desktop during installation, and why the backup should live on something other than that desktop.

The checkup screen

Press F12 for the checkup screen. It tests the things that break — the connection to the shop's server, the printer this till is set up for, the scanner, and the integrity of the shop's data — and names anything wrong in plain language.

The printer test probes without printing, so it is safe to press mid-shift. The full test page is one screen across, in the printer settings.

Run it before you call anyone. It answers most questions on its own.

Updates

Updates are staged in the background and applied only outside an open shift, so a till never restarts with a customer at the counter.

Update the store server first, then the tills.

Sync with your online store

If you run a Dukan online store, the shop's server is the only thing that talks to it — tills never do. It syncs on its own schedule, whenever the connection happens to be up, and never as a condition for selling.

Two indicators in the header tell you the two things separately: whether this till can reach the shop's server, and whether the shop's server can reach dukan.biz. The first one matters for selling; the second one does not.

The till says it cannot reach the server

Check, in this order:

  1. the server PC is switched on and awake;
  2. it is on the same network as the till — a router restart sometimes moves it;
  3. the store server service is running, which the server's own local page will tell you;
  4. nothing new is filtering the shop's network.

A till cannot complete a sale without the server, because the server is what makes the sale real and what stops two tills selling the same last item.

The printer prints nothing, or prints nonsense

Nothing at all is usually the connection: check the printer settings for this till, then run the test page.

Nonsense instead of Turkmen or Russian letters is the character table. Set it in the printer settings and print the test page again.

A scan does nothing

The till recognises a scan by how fast the characters arrive, so a scanner in the wrong mode types like a person and is treated like typing. Set the scanner to keyboard-wedge mode with an Enter after the code — the card that came with it will say how.

Still stuck

Contact our team with your shop name, which till it is, and roughly when the trouble started. If the checkup screen named something, send that line too — it is usually the whole answer.
